How To Choose A Marquise Cut Diamond

Have you decided to get a marquise cut diamond for your engagement ring? Unlike the more popular choices of the classic round cut and the romantic heart cut, the marquise cut diamond is a unique but still sophisticated choice for a center stone. This vintage cut would be an apt choice for a non-traditional couple.

History Of The Marquise Cut Diamond

The marquise cut has an interesting, royal, and romantic history. Briefly, it is said to have originated from the court of the French king, Louis XV. During his reign, in the 18th century, King Louis XV was rumored to have a mistress, Madame de Pompadour. It is rumored that the king ordered his court to have a diamond cut in the shape of his mistress’s lips.

Thereafter, members of the royal court with the title of “marquise” began to wear diamonds to indicate their rank and positions of power. Eventually, the royal title was ascribed to the long and narrow-shaped cut.

So, if you think the marquise cut diamond is the perfect stone for your significant other, you can take a look at custom engagement rings from Certified Diamond Network to impress her. But, how does one choose a diamond in this classy cut? Below are five tips to help you choose a marquise cut diamond like a jewelry connoisseur:

1. “Bow Tie” Effect

Elongated cut diamonds are susceptible to the bow-tie effect, which is when a bowtie-shaped dark area is visible on the gem. The dark area is due to misaligned facets, such that instead of reflecting light from the surface, the light is redirected out of the pavilion. The bow-tie can vary in intensity, so it can also be very light so you need not worry about it. Also, since certifications do not contain information specific to this flaw, you have to view the diamond personally to check for possible bow ties.

2. Length To Width Ratio

If you will notice, the marquise cut makes the diamond appear larger than it actually is. This illusion is due to its long and narrow shape as well as its large crown surface area, which makes it an ideal choice for those who desire to call attention to their engagement rings. The elliptical-shaped gem features 56 facets, yet depending on its length to width ratio, the stones can vary in appearance. An excellent ratio ranges from 1.80 to 2.05, but less than 1.56 or greater than 2.47 is considered a poor to fair length to width ratio. The classic marquise cut diamond has a 1.74 to 2.25 length to width ratio.

3. Symmetry

For a marquise cut diamond, symmetry is very important so you should ensure that you choose one with an excellent or very good range. Any defect in the symmetry, no matter how slight that is, will affect the overall stability of the diamond. An uneven cut will make the final setting of the ring appear lop-sided.

4. Ring Setting

Because the pointed shape of the marquise cut makes it prone to chipping, you should choose a ring setting that is designed to protect the diamond. A V-tipped prong setting and a halo setting are some excellent recommendations to ensure the highest protection for your diamonds while also adding more sparkle to your bling.

5. 4Cs Of Diamond Quality

Most importantly, check for the carat weight, color, and clarity assessed by certified gemmologists for quality. Basically, an excellent choice for a marquise cut diamond is at least 1.0 carats in weight, rated G or above in colour, graded SI1 or above in clarity, and has no florescence.
