When it comes to hair care, it is considered a personal choice. Rarely do we have medical reasons to wash our hair. The decision on how often you should wash your hair depends on the type of hair, scalp texture, personal preference and how oily the hair gets. In different people, when the hair is too-frequently washed it may cause damage and an itchy scalp. While for others, when infrequently washed, it makes the hair to look greasy and lifeless.
Cleaning of the hair too often has the potential of your hair and scalp drying out. It is advisable that if you have normal hair and scalp, washing once to thrice per week is enough. You should not overdo it using the hair washing products. Washing your hair daily make, the sebaceous glands in your scalp become over-reactive hence causing the hair to get greasier. There is no rule in the universe on how often you should wash your hair.
Why Shampoo your Hair
Washing your hair is similar to washing your skin. Water only removes the visible dirt and debris but does not remove the odor. It helps in effective removal of dirt, oily deposits, and debris. From the sebaceous glands, the hair gets its oil. This secrete oil is called sebum. It keeps the hair moisturized. Having a moisturized hair is an advantage since it is less likely to break or even look frizzy. Too much moisture can make your hair look greasy and dirty. If shampooing is not done for several days, the oil produced tends to build up close to the scalp, hence making the hair around the face to look dirty. Most of the hair shampoos have been designed to remove excess oil in the hair hence making the hair look clean and last for a longer time.
How do shampoo work
Shampoo that is used as a hair cleaner uses chemicals called surfactants to clean the hair. Most of the shampoos contain the sulfates compounds. These compounds produce a lather that helps in removing hair oil. It is very important to keep at least some oil on the hair to protect hair damage.
How frequently you should hair shampoo
Hair shampooing is not very much good for the health of the hair. This decision of how frequently you should shampoo your hair is mostly based on personal preferences and other factors like:
The hair type
Every different hair products in the market are made for different hair types. For every hair type and texture, it requires specific attention. This routine has no exception whatsoever. Hair with thin tresses seems to get dirty and oily quickly compared to hair with thicker strands that can go for long without cleansing. Curly hair can go for long without washing. It tends to be on the dry side. Coarse hair can go for a long time without having it being scrubbed while silky hair cannot go for a long time without a good scrub. On the other hand, having straight hair requires frequent washing.
The universal formula
These factors are too difficult to be figured out. There is only an average recommendation for this, whereby it is supposed to be 2-3 days in a week. The less you wash your hair, the more it trains itself on adapting. The training of the hair by itself to produce less oil, it takes a lot of time but in the end, it is worth.
The hair texture
If you have very dry hair, you do not need to wash it every other day. Washing it, less frequently helps in preserving the natural oils in the scalp. Dry hair is likely to be thick and curly whereas hair is considered oilier when it is very fine and straight.
Hairstyling preferences
Personal styling preferences are what matters when it comes to how often you should wash your hair. Some may dislike their hair for being oily while others may find it being manageable several days’ even days after washing.
Scalp condition
The scalp condition of a person affects even the condition of the hair. If you have a dry scalp, you tend to not produce much sebum hence washing the hair less often helps the scalp in remaining healthy and prevents itching and flaking. On the other hand, if you have an oily scalp, you may develop acne either on the scalp or even along the hairline and may require washing the hair more frequently to look clean.
Why is shampooing necessary
Health condition has been discovered when it comes to regular shampooing your hair. It can benefit you a lot and in many ways. If you have scalp parasitic infections, especially lice, then you need special shampoos to get rid of the bugs. With daily shampooing of your hair, it irritates eczema, having very dry skin and dandruff.

I use to think it was gross not to wash your hair every day and then a few years ago, after years of washing every single day I decided to try washing every other day and it was so hard at first but eventually your hair really does adjust to it. Now I only wash a few times a week and I love it! Not only is my hair and scalp healthier but I love not having to "do" my hair every day and how much I now save on shampoo conditioner and hair products. Dry shampoo was definitely my friend during those days I was training my hair and getting a good one is so important and vital. Every once in awhile I still have to use dry shampoo to get me through a day, especially if it's really hot outside (tends to make my hair oily for some reason) or I've worked out more that week or whatever the case may be.
